Project Description:
This full backyard remodel overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Laguna Beach was designed to maximize views and create multiple levels of outdoor living space while modernizing every surface. The outdated composite decking and bulky wood railings were completely removed and replaced with a new tiered deck layout using exotic IPE hardwood decking and stainless steel cable railings, preserving unobstructed ocean views from every angle.
The three-tiered design includes custom concrete steps with smooth stucco side walls and integrated step lighting, creating safe and elegant transitions between levels. The upper pool area was fully reimagined with new retaining walls, a floating bench seating area with a built-in fire pit, and an automated pool cover for safety. The pool was resurfaced with a Pebble Tec micro finish, while color-changing illuminated deck jets were installed for playful water features.
The entire deck and pool surround feature washed concrete hardscape, providing a natural complement to the IPE wood elements. Custom concrete steps with side planters allow seamless movement between the lower patio, mid-level deck, and upper pool area. All materials were locally sourced, and the plant palette features drought-tolerant California natives to blend with the coastal environment and require minimal maintenance.
This modern backyard design maximizes every inch of the lot while preserving panoramic ocean views, offering a perfect balance of function, safety, beauty, and relaxation.
